This is a collection of recommendations extracted from the eList community, green for positive :-) and brown for negative :-( , saved and organized so that you can find the name when you need it. The format is by category (i.e., "plumber", "gardener", etc.), followed by the recommended vendors, and the name of the person who have recommended them. If you have a question about the service a specific vendor provides, you can often click on the highlighted name to email those who gave the recommendations.
The recommendations have been adapted or paraphrased from posts to the eList. The eList is the "electronic equivalent of talking with your neighbors over the back fence" service provided by the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association (WGNA). For details on WGNA and the eList, see the website at www.wgna.net.
If you wish to recommend your favorite plumber, florist, restaurant, or whatever, please indicate your approval to quote here by including the phrase "okay to quote" in your posted recommendation. I will only post recommendations from those who are willing to stand behind their recommendations: if I'm not granted permission to include a "mailto:" link, I generally won't post the recommendation. Remember, this service is only useful if it has "content", so please send in your recommendations!

Phones and Phone Service:

Over the years we've had ATT (actually, the
company that ATT acquired), Sprint and Nextel. Nextel quality of service has
consistently been the

really well in our house. I had Verizon previously--the connection was terrible
and a lot of calls were
dropped. I found the AT&T Nokia 3595 to have the best reception and also

Keep a
"land-wire" phone:
For emergency use in case of power failure or natural disaster, you should keep
at least one simple old-fashioned phone. (Not a cordless phone, which requires
110V AC wall power.) A simple $15 Radio Shack wall phone is more likely to work
in an emergency because it runs from the low-voltage DC power that comes down
the phone line from your neighborhood phone central office. No wall power, no
batteries. The central office is powered by batteries which are kept charged up
so that the phones will work for a considerable time if there is a power
