Re: Comments by WGNA Board concerning preliminary plans for Super Safeway, Hamilton and Meridian

Following were the major points, questions and comments which the WGNA Board expressed at their September board meeting after reviewing the preliminary plans for the proposed new Super Safeway:

1. Request that careful attention be paid to traffic patterns both in and out of the property. The intersection at Hamilton and Meridian is already congested and the area directly in front of Safeway has been a problem area for years.

2. A close look at the pros and cons of 60 degree parking versus 90 degree parking is asked. Because there is a sizable number of elderly clients at this location, some board members felt that 60 degree parking would address this population's needs. They felt this age group and others might prefer angle parking.

3. There was debate about the lack of a setback on the south side of the building. Further explanation on how this approach affects future home owners whose properties would abut the back of the building is needed. Issues of easement and lot size need to be explained before the majority of the board feels comfortable with this plan.

4. It is unfortunate that the small roadway leading to the mini mall at Lenn and Meridian is scheduled to disappear. In keeping with the Planning Department's own guidelines which promote pedestrian mobility wherever possible, the Board asks that a walkway of some sort is devised which will enable people to pass from one retail site to the next.

5. The mature trees which are now located in the parking lot were discussed. The shade that they offer is welcomed and there was hope that these could be preserved. If not, than sizable replacement trees are requested.

6. The possibility of a community garden on the east side of the lot was presented. We are aware of the fact that members of the Dry Creek Village complex may have a use for this land. Should a community garden become part of the package, there is curiosity as to who would supply the water source and how would participants access the land.

The WGNA board thanks you for involving the community in this project.
